ELDERS of Okpoko community, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, yesterday called on Governor Willie Obiano not to impose an unpopular leadership on them because of their non-indigene status.

The elders made the call at the community secretariat in Okpoko after rising from a general meeting held in solidarity of the embattled President General, PG, Hon. Edwin Emesinwa, whose removal according to them was based on non-indigene status.

The elders who pleaded their case with Chiefs, Ezennia Aku and Oliver Madueke wondered why a democratically elected PG of the community would be removed not because he was not doing well but for the reason of his non-indigene status.

The elders told Tribune Online, that “Since his regime, we have witnessed what peace is all about.” Even as a non-indigene, he has always resisted extortion and intimidation of the residents who are 100 percent non-indigenes of the state.

“The community before he came in had never witnessed a democratically elected executive until he came in. It has been crises all through then because it was a caretaker committee leadership that was in place before we objected to it and God helped us to usher in a democratically elected leadership led by Emesinwa.

“Those who want him removed are some of the Governor’s aides who are benefitting from the crises because they want to install their stooge who they will use to empty the community treasury without the governor knowing.”

“They feed the governor with lies that will make him believe that they are with him even when it is all deceit.”

“These aides come up with the lie that the governor has ordered that election is re-contested in the area so as to remove the PG who is in his second tenure because he is a non-indigene of the state.”

In a swift reaction to the alleged plan to organize a fresh election in the area, the PG claimed that one of the state commissioners whose name he did not give had confided in him that the directive to remove him from office through a fresh election emanated from Gov. Willie Obiano.

The PG, however, expressed doubt that the governor would step too low to engage in petty politics, much more divide the people over indigenous.

He called on Gov. Obiano to call some of his functionaries to order saying that their actions are capable of instigating crisis and bloodshed in the densely populated community.

The community boss lamented that since taking -up leadership, the caretaker committee that was removed has refused to hand over to him some of the community property such as security van, guns, machetes, bank account and other valuables adding “they plan to use the guns to come and sack me on conducting their kangaroo election and they said would be held on 30th of this month.”
