Dead Liberian woman: The morning after

Following the early morning confusion faced by residents of Bankole Street, Isheri-Oke, in Lagos on Friday, where the people woke up in the morning to see Kate – a Liberian woman hanging on a tree, dead – they are still shock wondering why the lady would commit suicide.

Factnewsonline yesterday gathered that Kate, who was found hanging under a pear tree close to Isheri-Oke grammar school fence wearing a black sweater and orange skirt, actually hanged herself to death out of frustration.

A resident, who gave his name as Joe, spoke to Factnewsonline saying that ‘she lives at Orisha , at the other street with someone but i guess the person was not around when the incident occurred. My friend said he saw her on a day before the incident at Olowora, sitting down sober and frustrated’’

Speaking further he said ‘’ I used to see her passing around this street  looking sick and pale, in fact she was sick and I believed it was Aids. But because of this Ebola outbreak that was brought in by a Liberian man people started avoiding her probably because she is a Liberian woman and fear of contacting Ebola because of her look. Before her death, she went for a test and they said it was not Ebola that was why I said is AIDs.’’

When asked why she didn’t opt to go back to her country and what was the efforts of her church members to lighten her burden, he said  “her Church, The Redeemed Christian Church of God, I learnt gave her money to go travel home but on getting to the bus top nobody attended to her and she came back. It came to the point that nobody sales things to her. She died of frustration.’’ He concluded.

As at the time Factnewsonline visited the locality on Saturday, September 14, the pear tree, upon which she hanged herself, had already been cut down. Residents who responded to enquiries explained that what happened there was an abomination and as such the tree could no longer be allowed to stand in the locality. “It is forbidden, and culture demands that such trees be cut down after appeasing the gods of the land with a traditional sacrifice called Oro” the resident said.

Continuing he said, “The Oro, whenever is being done, everybody both young and old stays inside till the end. When they were doing it yesterday,  I locked my shop till they finished the sacrifice because if you come out especial ladies, you will die.’’.
