Federal government made a special promise to the people of Abia State earlier today, pledging to pay special attention to their needs, in terms of rural roads and environment, in the coming weeks and months.

During a special visit to the state, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Minister of Finance and Coordinator of the Nigerian Economy, made the promise in Umuahia, the state capital, after a meeting she had with the state Governor, Theodore Orji.

The Minister told journalists that she was sent to the state by President Goodluck Jonathan, on a special mission to make arrangement for Federal Government’s “rural assets and mobility project”, which she promised would soon take off in the state. “I really want to thank His Excellency, Mr. President for the support he gives us and the Vice President, to make this happen.

She explained that the “rural assets and mobility project” had been carried out in Cross River State, and that the result was marvelous and worth replicating in Abia State.

According to her, the intention of the visit was basically to bring to the state “solutions to some of its present problems on waste management; rural roads; some action on erosion; and maybe water supply.” She was on the visit with members of African Development Bank (ADB) under the leadership of Usman Dom.

On strategies the Federal Government intended to use in delivering the projects, she said it would be through the partnerships of African Development Bank (ADB) and Abia State government. “The objective of our visit is that African Development Bank under the leadership of Dr. Usman Dom, who incidentally was a former minister of Finance in Guinea (with) his distinguished colleagues have agreed to work with us to try and cement the legacy of His Excellency, the Governor and bring some more benefits to the good people of Abia State” she said.

On federal highways in the state, she told Factnews that she had suggested strategies to the Presidency on how best to tackle the problems. She accepted the fact that there is a level of decay and neglect of federal roads in and state, and promised that the FG would bring lasting solutions to them.

She went on to state that the visit was preliminary since there would be other visits before the projects were finally wrapped up “I'm a very happy person this morning" she said.

Finally, the Minister commended the Governor of the state, Theodore Orji, for what she called his “legacy projects”.
