After romping to two consecutive wins in the 2015 African Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, Congo have boasted that African champions, the Super Eagles cannot catch them again in the race to secure a place in the tournament, slated to hold in Morocco. The Red Devils, as the Congolese side are called, followed up their 3-2 away win against Nigeria in Calabar, with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Sudan on Wednesday in Brazzaville, a result that their French coach, Claude Le Roy believes has made his troops to be in better steads to qualify ahead of Nigeria and South Africa.
Nigeria, Congo, South Africa and Sudan are in Group B, with the best two finishers qualifying automatically for the Morocco tournament. “Our objective when we started this campaign was to qualify and after picking six points from two matches, I think that we are on the path to realising our mission. “And more importantly, I think we are in control of our destiny, which is a big thing considering that we are in the same group with the African champions. We have started well and hope to sustain this high tempo and qualify for the tournament in Morocco”, Le Roy told Radio France International.
Continuing, the much-traveled and experienced French tactician, whose side host South Africa on October 11 in the third match of the qualifying series, said that “the victory against Nigeria was very significant as it provided us the opportunity to get three vital points, which in the long run, will make our qualification possible as I do not see how the Nigerians can catch us again. “I am not being too over-confident but I feel satisfied with what the boys have done so far and hope to continue on this winning path when we confront South Africa”, said Le Roy. Nigeria’s next match in the qualifying series is an away tie against Sudan on October 10.
