Following the Ebola outbreak in the country, and the announcement of new resumption date for schools by the Federal Government, preparations are being stepped up across the country in readiness for it.

The new resumption date is September 13, instead of the September 22, as earlier announced by the government, and House of Representatives Committee on Education is not left out in the preparations.

Chairman of the committee, Aminu Suleiman, said recently that his committee will meet with Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Minister of education, Ibrahim Shekarau and other government officials on the education sector on Monday, September 16, to rub minds together on the issue. He said the major reason was to resolve controversies that have trailed the resumption date. It is to be recalled that the NMA has advised against the earlier resumption date.

Suleiman was speaking in Lagos on Wednesday, September 10, during his committee’s visit to Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) and Federal College of Education, (Technical), Akoka as part of the House Committee’s oversight function to tertiary institutions in the country. He said their intention for Monday’s meeting was to invite the executive through the Minister of Education. They were equally inviting the NMA, for the two important bodies to meet and interface together and arrive at the very objective position for the country.

He explained further that  the legislature have decided to abide by the NMA position because it was more superior and professional and has been bought into by those that were supposed to drive the project.

Aminu however, expressed his committee’s reservations on the state of affairs at the Federal University of Petroleum, Effunrun, Warri, in Delta State. He revealed that in the exercise of its oversight functions, it has invited the management of the institution to appear before it within 10 days.

Speaking on YABATECH, he explained that his committee has cautioned its  management over complaints of poor funding while its unspent overhead approved for the year 2014 of  N94 million had only recorded just about N32 million utilization.
