The Abia state government has advised all persons living in the state to go about their lawful businesses without fear of molestation.

According the Press Release signed by the Deputy Governor, Rt Hon Ude Oko Chukwu, no fatality has been recorded contrary to reports from some quarters. The statement also urged the Nigeria Army to be cautious in its actions.

The Statement reads:

"The attention of the Abia state government has been drawn to the clash between members of IPOB and a contingent of Nigeria Army at Afara in Umuahia, Abia state last week.

"Reports on all sides confirmed that there were casualties which unfortunately included innocent passerby. We are relieved up to this point that there has not been fatality.

"The government wishes to use this medium to appeal to all members of the public to remain calm. While we urge Nigeria Army to undertake its announced exercise with caution, we appeal to the public not to confront armed men in uniform.

"We make this appeal because government has responsibility to ensure safety of all persons resident in the state. Abia state has been a peaceful state and it is our desire to ensure it remains so. Therefore, we are advising all persons living in the state to go about their lawful businesses without fear of molestation."
