Abia Chief justice mourns late Justice Ferdinand Ewelike

Abia State Chief Judge, Justice Theresa Uzokwe has described the late Justice Ferdinand Ewelike Ukattah Rtd as courteous, accommodating, a quintessential gentleman and hardworking.


   Justice Uzokwe made this known in her speech during a high court session in honour of late Justice Ferdinand Ewelike Ukattah Rtd at the High court complex Umuahia.


   She said the late Rtd Pioneer Chief Judge of Abia State Justice Ukattah was a judge with uncompromising attitude as it relates to the independence of the Judiciary who gave his best and left a rich legacy in the Abia State Judiciary.


   The Chief Judge condoled the Imo, Abia and Ebonyi state governments and the entire people of Nigeria on the death and prayed God for the grace to bear the irreparable loss.


   In his remarks, the chief Judge of Imo State Justice Pascal Nnadi described the late Chief Judge as an erudite Judge, firm, generous, a father to all, and a quintessential Jurist.


   Also speaking, the Attorney General of the State represented by the solicitor general Mr. Enyinnaya Okezie described the late Rtd Judge as a man of exceptional intelligence, outstanding, and an enigma who believed in the administration of justice.

   In their separate speeches, the NBA Chairmen of Aba, Umuahia, Isialangwa, and Ukwa branches also described the late rtd Judge as an icon, statesman and great jurist.

The funeral service attracted the presence of a rtd Justice of the Supreme court, Justice I/F. Ogbuagu, Chief Judges from Imo State, Ebonyi among other judges.

Late Justice Ewelike was the first Chief Judge of Abia State and indeed the longest serving Chief Judge in Nigeria’s history.

He was born on 10 September 1933 to the family of late Mr and Mrs Ukattah Nkor in Isiala Ahaba Oloko Autonomous Community, Ikwuano LGA, Abia State.

Apart from his illustrious legal career, the late Ifenkwe also had a brief foray into politics which culminated into his being elected and serving as a Member of the Eastern House of Assembly from 1961-1966.

In his bid to significantly contribute to the development of his community, State and country, the late Ifenkwe, at various times, held several positions such as: Member, Board of Governors, Niger Gas Ltd, Emene, Enugu State (1966-1976) and Member, Price Control Board, Old Imo State (1976). He was also Member, Board of Governors, Teachers’ Training College, Uzuakoli (1975-1976), Chairman, Board of Governors, Ibeku High School, Umuahia (1975-9176) and Chairman, Urban Council, Old Imo State (1975-1976). In recognition of his integrity and forthrightness, he was appointed in 2004 by former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, as the Chairman of the Judicial Panel of Enquiry to investigate the death of the late National Vice Chairman (South-South) of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Aminasoari Dikibo.

He was buried last friday, December, 9th.
