A Nigerian progressive pressure group, Nigerian Unity Movement (NUM) has reacted to the issue of Ebola virus in Nigeria, demanding explanations and apology from Liberian government.

The group in a statement it released recently viewed with suspicion the fact that the Liberian/American citizen was allowed to fly into Nigeria, in spite of the fact that he was under quarantine in Liberia.

NUM demanded answers to certain questions such as: why did Liberian authorities allow Sawyer to travel knowing he was infected by the virus?; Why would Mr. Sawyer yank off his drip thereby letting his blood stain and contaminating the Hospital Room in Lagos?; and why would Mr. Sawyer become so unruly even to the extent of urinating on Hospital Care-Givers?

In the release signed by its President, Uzoh George-Tiga, and National Secretary, Biodun Obaromi, the group declared: “We demand an unreserved, written and widely publicised apology from the People and Government of Liberia through their President.”

It asked Nigerian President to severe diplomatic relation with Liberia, even before the Liberian apology, pending the conclusion and submission of the report of a panel of enquiry it called on government to set up.

The group demanded also that Liberian government should, as a matter of urgency, compensate Nigerian victims and their families as a “result of Sawyer’s callous acts”.

Among other issues the group treated in its release, was that of the last Osun election, which Rauf Aregbosola of All Progressives Congress (APC) won. It commended the Governor and INEC for the outcome of the election. “We congratulate Governor Rauf Aregbesola in his recent victory at the just concluded polls as we commend the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for improved conduct of the election.” It saw the conduct and result of the election as a sign of President Goodluck Jonathan’s maturity and magnanimity.

The group also reacted to issues of the last National Conference by cautioning that all parts of the country should know that the only way forward for the country should be for everybody and every section to take the country as a unifying project that must be open to the dictates of its citizenry.

“As the National Conference is coming to an end, we state that NUM is not disappointed with the recommendations so far but we specifically call upon the delegates to be wary of saboteurs who are vehement in truncating their good works” the group wrote.

The group saw referendum as the best way of getting final adoption for the conference decisions. George Tiga, told Factnewsonline that his group all around the country has started, in earnest, to sensitise and mobilise Nigerian citizens in preparation for the referendum.
