Don criticizes Nigerian’s attitude to polices

A Professor of Theater Arts, at the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State,  Effiong Johnson has criticised what he saw as Nigeria’s unhealthy attitude in the implementation of polices.

The professor disclosed this in Lagos recently while delivering a lecture titled: ‘Re-positioning Nigeria’s cultural industries for economic empowerment and social security’. He made the disclosure  at the fifth convocation lecture of the National Institute of Culture and Orientation (NICO), which was held at Nigeria Institute of International Affairs (NIIA).

Johnson used the forum to call for grassroots’ input into documents before any meaningful debate on the Draft Review by the National Assembly. He pointed out certain constructive criticisms levelled by authorities against the Cultural Policy for Nigeria (1988).

He then went on to explain that a democratic state, as Nigeria has become, must listen to the pulse of the people and address their concerns by ensuring that their expressions erre not joked with in the name of politics,

He also advised Governments at all levels and their agencies to repent and withdraw from all the skewed, schemed and marginalised tendencies against the arts. He explained that if Nigeria reposition arts and humanities related subjects in the educational curricular of primary, secondary and tertiary schools, that fundamental change would be instituted in the Nigerian society.

His words “ governments should provide enabling environments for the thriving of the arts at all levels of the country’s educational training, academies, arts galleries, museums, sanctuaries and indeed wherever genuine arts practices are carried out to aid fundamental changes.”

He added that there has been an observation that cultural industries have dislocated from their places of prominence or relevance. He also said that realising the crucial place of culture in a nation’s life and the various responsibilities and contributions cultural industries would make, would be important in making sure that culture really fulfills its essence.
