In a bid to ensure a viral and proactive civil service that can contribute to the development of Abia State, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has emphasized the need for reorientation of the state workforce.

He said the training and retraining of staff will enculcate in civil servants better work ethics and productivity.

Governor Ikpeazu who stated this when he received a delegation of the chairman and members of the Abia State Civil Service Commission at Government House Umuahia, regretted that the civil service has lost its vision in terms of evaluation, target setting and total quality management as well as efficient dedicated and committed civil servants.

According to him, things are not done the way they are supposed to be done especially in terms of expectation, speed, efficiency and dedication, adding that he would love to have a more swift, proactive, ICT swarvy civil service.

While identifying idleness, poor attitude to work, under-utilization, aparthy and near hatred for the job as part of the bane of the Civil service, the Governor expressed hope that the system will in future revolve itself to make do with indolent and incompetent workers.

"There is need to emphasize training and retraining of staff to inculcate in our workers that the civil service is not a career you take up out of frustration. It is a career you take up because you think you can make valid contributions to governance and welfare of the people.

"There is need for reorientation of the people to ensure civil servants are innovative to generate ideas that can give us resources to contribute to the system", he added.

Ikpeazu however stated that the only way to go is a viral workforce that are motivated, patriotic and determined to bring about innovative ideas that will ensure service and revenue accrue to the state.

He expressed confidence that the members of the Abia State Civil Service Commission will acquit themselves and live up to expectation of ensuring a renewed, reinvigorated and motivated workforce in Abia.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Commission, Sir Vin Nwogwugwu who said they came to formally present themselves to the state Governor after their inauguration on 28th April 2016, thanked him for finding them worthy to serve the state and assured that that they will leave up to expectation.

Nwogwugwu disclosed that the Commission has set up a committee to ascertain the number of civil servants in the state.
