The Abia state government has shut down a branch of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) located at 34 Aba road, opposite FMC, Umuahia, over Non-remittance of Tax.

The Bank premises was sealed following a court injunction, as security operatives were seen standing outside with their vehicle blocking the entrance.

Factnews correspondent gathered that a suit was filed against GTB by the Abia Board of Internal Revenue with suit No: A/M180/2014 where the Board is the Claimant and the Bank, the Defendant.

The Abia Board of Internal Revenue in the suit claimed that the Defendant, GTB, was duly served with the demand Notice for the Remittance of the sum of 167,645,765.78 which became due to the Abia state Revenue service but the Defendant did not make remittance within the time limited by the Demand Notice.

A representative of the Board, Mr. Emmanuel Alozie who spoke with our correspondent on the Phone confirmed that the Bank was shut down due to non remittance of Tax. The bank Premises was sealed at the expiration of the window period following the Demand Notice. He however declined to state the period under contention.
Efforts made to reach GTBank officials to ascertain their position on the issue proved abortive.

Meanwhile, the Bank has notified their customers of the development through a memo pasted on the wall of the premises. The notice advised customers to use alternative channels for their Bank transactions or visit their Aba or Owerri office pending when the matter will be resolved
