Heavy flooding over eastern Japan has washed away houses and forced residents to their rooftops, desperate for rescue by military helicopters.

The raging floodwaters spawned from Typhoon Etau,  which has dumped 60 Centimeters of rain over some areas since Monday.
Ibaraki and Tochigi prefectures are now deluged and unrecognizable following weeks of daily rainfall.

More than 170,000 people have been evacuated, while slot of houses have been submerged.

Members of the Japanese Self Defense Forces dropped helicopter lines to pluck stranded residents from their roofs.

In parts of Tochigi, more than 50 Centimeters of rain fell in 24 hours, amounting to double of what typically falls within the region in all of September.

Fukushima prefectures, which was devastated by 2011 tsunami, saw more than 30 Centimeters of rain in 48 hours, the heaviest downpour there is 50 years.
