ABIA NORTH SENATOR, UCHE CHUKWUMERIJE DIES AT 75

Nigeria and the people of Abia state was on Sunday evening April the 19th, 2015 thrown into mourning with the death of Senator Uche Chukwumerije, representing the Abia North Central Constituency at the red chamber of the National Assembly.

The death of the three time senator was announced in a statement by his son, Chidi Chukwumerije who noted that the senator died company of his family, after a gallant battle with lung cancer at a private Turkish hospital, Abuja.
The late Chukwumerije came to national prominence when he served as information Minister for the interim government regime of Ernest Shonekan and briefly the regime of Ibrahim Babangida. He later won a seat to the National Assembly where he served as a senator from 2003 to 2015.

He was born in November, 1939. Meanwhile, the Nigeria senate has described the death of its serving member as a great loss to the nation. Chairman, senate Committee on Information and Media, Senator Enyinnay Abaribe said the lawmaker was apolitical giant and one of the nation’s finest legislators, adding that the senator’s painstaking approach to committee work will be missed.

The Senate President David Mark who expressed shock and sadness over the death said Nigeria has lost an erudite and extraordinary nationalist.
He lamented that Chukwumwrije was one of the brightest and fertile minds in the senate.
