Following the success recorded despite glitches at the field test of the card readers that will authenticate Permanent Voter Cards, through biometrics at the polls by the Independent National Electoral Commission in the six geo-political zones across the country, it appears the card readers would be used during the general elections.

The exercise was reported to have gone on peacefully at the selected centres,as the voters turned out for the exercise at the polling units.
The card reader machines evidence showed reliability as it took between two to five seconds, except in some special cases to read the permanent voter cards, and to accredit a potential voter.

Meanwhile, the Peace Committee for the 2015 general elections headed by former head of state Abdulsalami Abubakar has okayed the use of the card readers by INEC during the 2015 general elections.

The committee after consulting the INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba and other stakeholders of the electoral process at a closed door meeting expressed its confidence that the general elections would be conducted on the rescheduled date under a peaceful and calm atmosphere.

The use of the card reader had caused controversies in different quarters over the propriety or otherwise of the electronic device.
