Abia gov’s son denies speakership ambition

The first son of Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State, Chinedum, on
Tuesday said he had no intention to become the Speaker of the Abia
State House of Assembly in 2015.

Chinedum said this during a political stakeholders’ meeting of
Ikwuano/ Umuahia federal constituency, which held at the Ikwuano
country home of the National Vice Chairman, South East, Peoples
Democratic Party, Col. Austin Akobundu (retd.).

The meeting, which was chaired by former governorship candidate of
PDP, Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, had in attendance political heavy weights
from the constituency, including federal and state assembly members,
commissioners, other political office holders and aspirants.

Orji’s son dismissed the speculation about his speakership ambition as
a baseless political propaganda peddled by detractors to discredit his
family.

However, he confirmed that he was actually in the race to represent
his Umuahia Central State constituency at the House of Assembly, but
said his ambition had no connection with becoming the speaker.

According to him, becoming the Speaker would obviously cause friction
between him and his father’s successor as unnecessary motives would be
imputed into his actions by those wanting to curry favour from the
governor.

Asked later in an interview if he would not accept the offer if
prevailed upon by his colleagues, he vowed to turn it down, explaining
that “it is good to balance political equation; somebody from old PDP
divide has to be the speaker.”
