Nigerian striker Peter Odemwingie is set to be offered a new contract by Stoke City despite being sidelined due to injury.

Odemwingie has been on the sidelines since August owing to a cruciate knee ligament injury, but the former West Bromwich Albion and Cardiff City man will be out of contract at the Britannia Stadium at the end of this season.

It is likely the striker will be offered an one-year deal by The Potters considering he will turn 34 next season.

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has revealed that "there's something in place" for Odemwingie despite being knocked out by a long-term injury this term.

"There's something in place, I think, so we will have discussions nearer the time. We'd like to think he would get back before the end of the season. He might not make it, but even so he's working exceptionally hard to make it.

"He knows he has to work really hard. With that injury he needs to do the work now so that he won't be compromised when he comes back," said Hughes.

The 33-year-old has began "running outside" and is closing in on a return to full fitness.

"I have just started running outside, which is a massive step for me. From now onwards hopefully things will accelerate a little bit for me.

"In terms of the minimum period I was told I would be out for, I am just over half way through that now," said Odemwingie.

Odemwingie has made just two appearances for Stoke City in the Barclays Premier League this season before a cruciate knee ligament injury cut his season short.
